It has been a summer filled with good music and good company out on the South Steps of the Kansas Statehouse.
And the fun of South Steps Fridays isn’t over just yet!
Thus far, we have welcomed more than two dozen different agencies and organizations across Topeka and northeast Kansas to come share the opportunities and activities they offer. Last week the Topeka Civic Theatre Academy performed short skits from their current show, “The Wizard of Oz.” In June, we held an event themed with outdoor opportunities. Groups came to present information about activities and programs and encouraged Kansas to explore the wonders of their own backyards. Many state agencies have attended to present different programs they offer to residents, ranging from the attorney general to wildlife, parks and tourism.
The information booths were not alone. They were accompanied by music provided by the University of Kansas School Of Music. University students performed in a string trio and a jazz combo with performances sponsored by Reach Out Kansas Inc.
Capitol Complex visitors, state employees and others working in the area enjoyed the music, checked out the information tables and soaked up the sun out on the South Steps area.
“When we were designing an event, we were hoping to create a festival-like atmosphere where residents of all ages and walks of life can jumpstart the weekend basking in the sun near the beautiful Kansas Statehouse,” said John Milburn, director of legislative and public affairs for the Department of Administration.
“These events have met that goal and then some. The response from the public, state employees and our participants suggest that South Steps Fridays is a hit and becoming THE place to be this summer,” Milburn said.
However, the fun is not over yet! We have two remaining events scheduled to wrap up the summer. This upcoming Friday, we will be joined by Symphony in the Flint Hills, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas National Guard and more. Music will be again provided by KU Jazz Combo I.
Our last event will be held on August 7. This will be one you certainly won’t want to miss.
Grab your lunch and get ready for a ride as we take a trip back in time for our last South Steps Fridays event. With Big Band and Swing music, we are creating a 1940s atmosphere. We will be honoring veterans as the week marks the 70th anniversary of V - J Day in World War II, as well as the 50th anniversary of the introduction of conventional forces in Vietnam.
