Local government official from communities across the state are benefiting from the educational outreach being provided by the Kansas Department of Administration (KDOA).
The Municipal Services Team with the Office of the Chief Financial Officer within the Department of Administration is offering the 2014 Basics of Budgeting Workshop in six locations across the state and are seeing increased attendance as those responsible for budgeting across the state welcome the training and assistance the agency offers.
Municipal officials from all types of local government (counties, cities, townships, and special districts) involved in the budgeting process and CPAs involved in governmental practice are invited to attend. Workshops this year will be held in Iola, Colby, Hays, Salina, Topeka, and Wichita and will be attended by approximately 300 registrants, an increase of 46% over last year.
Topics covered in the workshop include the Budget and Cash Basis Law of the state, a legislative update of bills having an impact on the budgeting or financial practices of local governments, and the information available on the Municipal Services portion of the KDOA website, which was launched April 2nd.
In addition, part of the workshop is dedicated to creating and walking through a municipal budget using the Excel workbooks developed by the Municipal Services Team. At a recent workshop, a new city manager found the workshop extremely beneficial and stated that the budgets workbooks and process can appear pretty daunting until explained and reviewed.
The Municipal Services Team views its role as education and outreach to local units of government and tries to make the workshop relevant to both the novice and experienced budget preparer. The Municipal Services teams works with local government officials throughout the year and enjoys the opportunity that the workshops present to help develop relationship with local government officials and to provide an overview of the services the team provides.
There is still time and seating available at the May 29h Workshop in Hays and the June 4th Workshop in Topeka. If interested in attending, please contact Roger Basinger with the Municipal Services Team at 785-296-8083 or at Roger.Basinger@da.ks.gov.
