KDHE to hold community Health and Wellness Fair May 13

May 12, 2015

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) will host a community-wide health and wellness fair on Wednesday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The fair will be held on the south lawn of the Kansas Statehouse and is open to the public, the downtown Topeka community and State of Kansas employees.

Approximately 60 area health and wellness groups will offer educational resources, interactive demonstrations and screenings. Free screenings or assessments for cholesterol, blood pressure, percentage of body fat, body mass index, vision, hearing, blood sugar, balance, posture, flexibility and grip strength will be available.

“Our annual health and wellness fair gives those who visit and work in the downtown area a great opportunity to get resources and tools to take a positive step toward better health,” said KDHE Secretary Susan Mosier, MD, MBA.

The fair will also highlight health education, chronic disease management techniques, increased physical activity and access to healthy foods.

The fair kicks off of the Capitol Midweek Farmers Market, held every Wednesday from May 13 to Oct. 14 on the south side of the Capitol along 10th Avenue. This week’s market features asparagus, green onions, beets, radishes, leafy greens, kettle corn and fresh-cut flowers.

A new feature of this year’s fair is drinking water testing. KDHE will provide free drinking water testing for visitors who bring a sample of their home’s water.

In the event of cancellation due to inclement weather, the health and wellness fair will be rescheduled at the same time and location for Wednesday, May 20.
