What should I wear to my internship?
General Expectations
The standard dress code is business casual, unless otherwise specified by your department or for special events. Your attire should be neat, clean, and appropriate for a professional government environment.
Acceptable Attire Includes:
-
Tops: Collared shirts, blouses, modest sweaters, and tops with sleeves
-
Bottoms: Slacks, khakis, dress pants, professional skirts or dresses (knee-length or longer)
-
Footwear: Flats, loafers, dress shoes; opt for closed-toe shoes unless they are dress sandals.
-
Outerwear: Blazers or cardigans as needed—note that offices may be air-conditioned
Avoid the Following:
-
Jeans, leggings (unless worn with a longer top or dress), shorts
-
Flip-flops, athletic shoes, or overly casual sandals
-
T-shirts with graphics or logos (unless agency-branded)
-
Clothing that is tight, revealing, or otherwise inappropriate for a formal workplace
-
Hats or headwear (unless for religious or medical reasons)
Additional Notes:
-
Statehouse events or Legislative Days: Some roles may require formal business attire (suits, ties, dress slacks).
-
Casual Fridays (if applicable): Some departments may allow more relaxed attire on Fridays—check with your supervisor first.
