Recidivism Rate of Adult Offenders

Posted on October 21, 2021 at 12:51 PM by Kansas Department of Administration

This measure is based on the Association of State Correctional Administrators (ASCA) methodology, which is calculated annually. The recidivism rate represents the percentage of adult offenders released from a Department of Corrections facility who were readmitted within 36 months of release. Lower recidivism rates indicate fewer offenders returning to a correctional facility for offenses occurring after their release from the correctional facility.  Offender rehabilitation is provided through a full spectrum of education, cognitive, and behavioral programs with the goal of reducing the likelihood of re-offending.   The FY 2017 recidivism rate will represent the percent of offenders released in calendar year 2013 who were readmitted to the correctional system.

In some cases, quarterly data has been annualized to provide a better comparison to prior fiscal years.  Generally, measures that use percentages have been annualized.  This prevents distortions in the quarterly data that may occur because of smaller populations sizes.  Measures that show the numbers of incidents, activities or individuals reflect actual numbers for the quarter.  This allows users to see progress from one quarter to the next towards identified goals.
