The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) is currently seeking a Legal Assistant (unclassified, non-exempt, benefits eligible) to support the attorneys in the Office of General Counsel in Topeka. The Office of General Counsel serves as legal counsel to the Commission and prepares hearing notices, orders, memoranda, briefs, pleadings, contracts, and other legal documents.
The Legal Assistant would have the following responsibilities:
- Docket and appellate case management, involving coordinating all aspects of a case and ensuring appropriate steps are taken in a timely fashion.
- Calculating legal deadlines and filing documents as required.
- Legal research, fact-gathering and information retrieval via libraries and computer-based research.
- Maintaining contact with other parties or counsel, under the attorneys’ supervision.
- Drafting and analyzing legal documents including pleadings.
- Drafting and signing legal correspondence.
- Preparing for and assisting with hearings.
- Summarizing documents and proceedings, including pre-filed testimony.
- Attending hearings and court proceedings with the attorneys, where possible.
- Provide backup support for legal assistants in Litigation Division.
Preferred Requirements: 5-7 years experience as a Legal Assistant.
Must be precise, meticulous and detail-oriented; a thorough researcher familiar with legal citation; a strong communicator and initiator; highly organized and able to maintain office organization.
Salary: $36,000 to $45,000 annually dependent on experience.
