The incumbent in this position assists offenders through personal or group interaction in developing positive behavioral changes by means of group activity or individual growth. Organizes and administers leisure time activities for a diverse population of offenders in cooperation with medical, professional, volunteer, and security staff. Conducts inspections, supervises inmate workers, and maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies. Minimum Requirements: Four years of experience in recreation, athletics, music, or art. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Minimum Competencies: Incumbent will be able to interact with coworkers, inmates, and outside personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Applicant selected will have strong organizational skills and function with minimal supervision and direction.
Necessary Qualifications: Must be able to perform the Essential/Event Driven Functions required for this position. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
Preferred Skills: Four year degree with major coursework in art, recreational therapy, recreation physical education, or occupational therapy, and one year experience in recreation, athletics, music or art; or two year degree with major coursework in art, recreational therapy, recreation physical education or occupational therapy and two years of experience in recreation, athletics, music, or art may be substituted for the four years of experience.
Performance Standards: Knowledge of the methods and techniques of athletic or recreational activities. Knowledge of security factors in dealing with adult offenders. Knowledge of modern concepts, principles, and practices related to dealing with the rehabilitation of offenders. Knowledge of relevant facility handbooks, policies, procedures, regulations, and statutes. Ability to evaluate condition of inmate in relation to available activities and to establish an appropriate habilitation or rehabilitation program. Ability to direct and instruct groups and individuals participating in structured activities. Ability to observe, recall, and document behavior, surroundings, and events. Ability to maintain accurate records and reports of habilitation or rehabilitation progress. Ability to recognize and report behaviors in individuals that impede program progress or threaten behavior. Ability to think and act appropriately during an emergency. Ability to communicate information concisely and accurately in verbal or written form. Ability to supervise and control adult offenders individually and in groups.
