The Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex (KJCC) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Physical Plant Supervisor, KJCC– Topeka, KS. This position is administrative and technical work in supervising and directing the total operations and maintenance of the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex buildings and grounds. This position involves supervision of semi-skilled and skilled workers in their maintenance and repair responsibilities. This position assist in the preparation of plans and specifications for work projects, and the preparation of administrative and budget reports relating to the physical plant and grounds operations. This position also determines material and supply needs, ordering of supplies and selects maintenance personnel to perform specific maintenance task and preventative maintenance task on a daily basis.
Salary: Salary begins at $17.39 per hour, depending on experience and/or skill level of applicant. Unclassified (At-Will), Full-Time, Nonexempt, Benefits Eligible.
This position, while performing functions in areas of responsibility, will promote and support satisfactory and harmonious relationships among all staff in all areas of the facility.
Supervise semi-skilled and skilled maintenance employees and Juvenile Offenders (assigned to maintenance department) in the installation, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems to include the power plant operations, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical power distribution, refrigeration, water supply and sewage systems to ensure uninterrupted power and mechanical services to the KJCC complex. Duties performed by developing assignments, instructing employees on performing the job and assisting subordinates with the more difficult projects. Reviews progress and completed jobs, evaluates performance and recommends employment actions.
Assists in management of the department and provides supervision in the absence/unavailability of Physical Plant Supervisor Specialist by supervising/conferring with other personnel, reviewing progress of projects, assigning personnel, preparing work schedules, providing materials and supplies for projects and the management of employees work and leave time. Determines materials, equipment and supplies needed to perform specific jobs and completes necessary requisitions for parts, materials and equipment in SMART. Picks up parts and equipment in town as necessary. Daily monitors Facility Dude work order program to assure work orders are assigned to appropriate staff, work order prioritization and the completion of the work orders in a timely fashion.
Assist the Physical Plant Supervisor Specialist in the preparation of budget requests for the physical plant operations by evaluating the efficiency of equipment, procedures and by calculating future needs for maintenance or repair projects that would be beneficial to the complex.
Performs periodic visual inspections of buildings, grounds and other mechanical equipment for fire and safety hazards and maintenance needs by inspecting facilities and equipment regularly, and arranging and making repairs. Oversees and checks work projects for proper installation and quality. Assure subordinates are properly performing tool and equipment control each day and submitting tool log sheets as required. In the absence of the Physical Plant Supervisor Specialist and on a prescheduled rotating basis will be on-call to provide after-hour maintenance to provide emergency maintenance assistance as needed at the complex. Attends training as required by KJCC policy. Work reviewed through periodic meeting and review of results, by Physical Plant Supervisor Specialist.
Four Years of experience in building trades or mechanical building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency
Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications:
Experience with machinery most frequently used: Gas & Electric Welder, Power Band Saw, Electric Hand Drills, Drill Press, Pipe Threading Machine, Power Sewer Machine, table saw, Radial Arm Saw, Refrigeration and Electrical Testing Equipment. Knowledge with Metasys environmental computer-controlled system, M-5 graphics, HVAC Pro, DX controllers. Ability to read electrical drawings and system schematics, and use of the tools and knowledge in electrical and mechanical crafts in order to diagnose and repair physical plant equipment and systems. Must be able to do heavy physical labor and to climb ladders and work from scaffolding/skyjacks.
