Job Duty Description: Performs mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment based on the needs of the agency.
Minimum Qualifications: Six months of experience in automotive mechanics at low end and two years of experience in automotive mechanics at the higher range. Education may be substituted for experience as determined by the agency.
Salary range: 31,262.40-$34444.80
Performance Standards: This position supervises, instructs, evaluates and performs skilled work using all types of available automotive test equipment and tools to work on fuel systems, electrical systems and other finely adjusted equipment. Ensures all levels of vehicle maintenance and repair are performed on schedule. Supervises work of inmates assigned to the auto shop to include assigning and inspecting their work. This position Instructs in the safe and proper use of tools and equipment of the mechanics trade. Incumbent assures that all safety and fire prevention rules are enforced in the auto shop area. Incumbent searches the shop area and inmates to deter the introduction of contraband into the institution. This position provides a general orientation of the use of safety equipment such as jack stands and proper use of eye protection. The selected candidate maintains a tool inventory in the auto shop area via a check-out and check-in system.
Preferred Requirements: Knowledge and experience of the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Prior experience working with inmates is preferred but not required.

Selection Process: Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions, and possibly a performance or written test. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval. A second interview may be conducted. Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency.
