Job Duties: This position serves as a first level supervisory position for the facility and as such is tasked with evaluating subordinate staff performance, correcting inappropriate behavior and instructing staff on performance standards. The incumbent in this position enforces all laws, rules and regulations of the Secretary of Corrections, department policies and unit orders pertaining to the operations of the department. The incumbent will be able to interact with inmates and co-workers to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Duties may include the supervision of all security activities in a cell house, an institutional control center or specialized posts or units by observing and recalling inmate behavior, surroundings and events. Engages in or supervises taking and reporting periodic counts of inmates. Supervises the daily activity schedules of inmates in assigned area of responsibility. Participates and/or supervises the searches/pat-down of inmates and conducts (or supervises) searches for contraband materials in a cell house, dormitories, living units and other places. Conducts briefings for all new inmates assigned to a cell house, dormitory, or living unit providing the inmate with the information on policies and procedures to be followed while assigned to that unit.
This position requires good oral and written communication skills; strong problem solving skills; effective conflict management skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and effective customer service skills; ability to adapt to new situation and/or changes. The incumbent must be capable of performing established Essential Physical Functions. An initial 6-month probationary period is required for new or promoted employees.

Pay: Pay Grade 24
Minimum Requirements: Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for COI (A); be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment; have 2 years of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders; and have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). At the discretion of the agency, relevant college coursework or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required COTP.
Minimum Competencies: The incumbent will possess strong organizational skills and have good grammar, oral and written communication skills. Applicants will be able to interact with co-workers, inmates and outside personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Applicants will have the ability to comprehend, interpret and apply State statutes, regulations, policies and general orders.
Necessary Qualifications: Must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the position. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval. A second interview may be conducted.
