Job Description:

A Corrections Officer I supervises, maintains discipline and control of offenders at all times.  Performs searches and shakedowns of offenders, persons and physical areas in order to prevent and control secretion of contraband.  Observes and monitors offender activities and interactions while enforcing policy, rules, and regulations.  Follows established security procedure in controlling visitors, staff, offender and vehicular traffic to prevent the admittance or exit of authorized persons and the introduction of contraband.  Takes and reports periodic counts of offenders.  Responds to emergency situations in accordance with appropriate contingency plans.  Subject to regular rotation or post and/or shift assignment within the facility.  Corrections Officers are required to weapons qualify under KDOC guidelines during initial training and on an annual basis.

Minimum Requirements:

-At least 18 years of age at the time of appointment;

-High school diploma or equivalent;

-Valid driver’s license;

-Free of felony conviction(s); free of any felony and/or misdemeanor domestic violence crime;

-Taken and successfully passed the KDOC Corrections Officer Test* within the last year; and

-No DUI convictions within the last 24 months.

-Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must have taken and passed a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency. Additionally, selected the selected candidate must pass a TB screening.

 

*KDOC Corrections Officer Testing will take place the week of December 11 and 18, 2017. Recruiter will e-mail/call qualified applicants to schedule.

 

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

Ability to deal effectively with individuals; knowledge of procedures and practices of supervising offenders confined in an adult maximum correctional facility; and ability to use physical force as warranted to subdue violent offenders.

 

Performance Standards: 

CO I (A)’s are evaluated on their ability to observe and recall offender behavior, surroundings and events; write clear and complete sentences; respond to emergencies quickly, climb stairs, and use physical force to subdue violent and resisting offenders; remain alert over long periods of time; remain calm during stressful situations; and interact with offenders and co-workers to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The incumbent must be capable of performing Essential Physical Functions. An initial 12-month probationary period is required for new Corrections Officers.  

 

New Hire Pay Rate: $14.66, plus shift differential (if applicable). Full time position with benefits.

Officers working 2nd (2 pm to 10 pm) or 3rd (10 pm to 6 am) shift are paid an additional shift differential of 30 cents an hour.  Overtime work is available.  We are a 24 hour/7 day a week operation so days off are consecutive but may be during the week.  Shift and Days Off will be determined after candidates are hired. Preferences for Shift will be taken into consideration, but not guaranteed.

Orientation: Monday, January 22, 2018 – Friday, January 26, 2018

Basic Training: Monday, January 29, 2018 – Friday, February 16, 2018
