Job Duties: Transports inmates between KDOC facilities. Ensures compliance with all departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to transportation security. Conducts regular counts of inmates being transported, documenting such counts in the appropriate logs as directed departmental policies. Supervises inmates during the transportation process. As Officer-in-Charge, or second officer, supervises, maintains discipline and controls of inmates I their living quarters, at meals, in classrooms, in the hospital, kitchen and bathing areas. Transports parole violators, inabsentia inmates, inter-state compact cases and contract jail program inmates from various county and out-of state-agencies to the appropriate DOC, County or State facility. Transports inmates to medical and court trips for Lansing Correctional Facility. Controls items of a security nature such as firearms, tools, locks, keys, medical equipment and drugs. 

This position requires strong problem solving skills; good oral and written communication skills; effective conflict management skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and effective customer service skills; ability to adapt to new situations and/or changes. The incumbent must be capable of performing established Essential Physical Functions. An initial 6-month probationary period is required for new or promoted employees.

Pay: Pay grade 20

Minimum Requirements: Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for CO IA.  In addition, a minimum of one year of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders; and have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). At the discretion of the agency, relevant college coursework or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required COTP.

Minimum Competencies: Applicants will be able to interact with co-workers, inmates and outside personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Applicants will have the ability to comprehend, interpret and apply State statutes, regulations and policies. Necessary Qualifications: Must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the position. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

How You Will Be Evaluated: Once you complete and submit your application materials, your application will be reviewed to ensure you meet the minimum and any necessary special requirements.  Next, your application will be evaluated and rated based on preferred competencies and criteria for the position.

What To Expect Next: Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions.  The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval.  A second interview may be conducted.  Candidates will be subject to a job reference check, background and criminal history investigation, drug screen and TB test.
