The incumbent has the responsibility for maintenance of vehicles in the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex fleet. Responsible for training and supervision of juvenile offenders working in the diagnosis, repair and general maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, mowers and other heavy equipment, both gasoline and diesel powered. Assists skilled maintenance and craft workers in any phase of equipment maintenance and repair, building and grounds, construction and other maintenance. Independently performs semi-skilled work in maintenance of equipment, buildings and grounds.
Schedules all work for this work area. Performs full range of overhaul and repair work on light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Ensures that all levels of vehicle maintenance and repair, whether general or detailed, are being performed on schedule. Supervises and instructs juvenile offenders in the repair and reconditioning of all institutional vehicles, transportation buses, tractors, mowers and other machinery, in order to facilitate timely and effective operation of vehicles and machinery. Instructs in the safe and proper use of all related tools and equipment of the mechanics trade. Repairs/replaces vehicle components, such as: brakes, carburetors, and water pumps. Performs preventive maintenance tasks, such as: changing oil, air and oil filters, fan belts and transmission fluids.
Troubleshoots/diagnoses vehicle electrical and fuel systems using special test equipment and compression testers. Supervises, instructs and performs the skilled work, using all types of available automotive test equipment and tools related to vehicle repair.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Candidates must have reached their 21st birthday at the time of appointment;
- Be free of felony conviction;
- Free of any felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime;
- Have had no DUI convictions within the last 24 months;
- Confirmation that candidate is not on the Child Abuse Registry;
- Must complete TB screening process;
- Take and pass a drug test approved by the Office of Personnel Services prior to being appointed to this position unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties;
- Possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.
One year of experience in automotive and/or diesel mechanics to meet the needs of the agency. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Valid Class B Kansas Driver’s License. Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and equipment of the trade. Considerable knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the trade.
