Mainly supervisory and limited administrative work in directing the grounds maintenance operations of the Complex that requires the application of advanced technical skills and knowledge. Maintaining Complex grounds by performing total grounds maintenance of the areas and keeping Complex grounds attractive by mowing, trimming grass, trees and shrubbery, maintaining landscaping areas, and providing upkeep of lawns in the summer and snow removal and building maintenance in the winter.
Plans, assigns and evaluates the work of 2 to 4 Juvenile Offenders (JO’s) on a daily basis. Supervises JO’s for mowing and trimming of the Complex lawns, trimming of shrubbery and trees, application of grass seed to new or existing lawns, and application of chemicals to lawns to prevent broadleaf growth. Instructs JO’s on the proper safety precautions that need to be applied before using any lawn care equipment. Instructs JO’s on the proper procedures to use when maintaining lawn care equipment. Instruct JO’s on the proper procedures to use when mowing and trimming lawns. Operates, maintains and supervises the operation of mowers, tractors, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and other light duty equipment associated with grounds maintenance. Maintains KJCC Complex sidewalks, walkways and parking lots by instructing JO’s on the proper procedures to use during snow and/or ice removal and application of ice melt to sidewalks and/or other walkways around the Complex.
Plans, assigns and evaluates the work of 2 to 4 JO’s in total building maintenance especially in the winter months. Duties may include grounds maintenance to pick up leaves, tree branches, trash, and to assist with snow removal of the KJCC Complex sidewalks, parking lots, and entryways. Performance of minor electrical work such as replacement of light bulbs, ballasts, receptacles, and light switch replacement. Perform minor custodial duties such as, sweeping, stripping, sealing and waxing of floors throughout the Complex. Perform any minor general maintenance duties such as moving of office furniture, assisting in renovations of buildings, assisting with mechanical repairs throughout the Complex and performing all necessary preventive maintenance associated with such equipment. Some work to be performed as a special project with instructions given by supervisor.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment;
- Possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D.;
- You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation/determination;
- Free of felony convictions or adjudication, whether or not expunged,
- Free of conviction or adjudication by a court of law or court-martial, of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year (whether or not the sentence was imposed);
- Free of conviction as an adult of Driving Under the Influence (or comparable law regarding driving while intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance) in the past 24 months, as an adult or juvenile;
- Free of conviction or adjudication of a misdemeanor involving drug use or possession in the past 60 months;
- Free of any criminal charges, indictments or outstanding warrants pending;
- Take and pass a drug test approved by the Office of Personnel Services prior to being appointed to this position unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties;
- Must take and pass a post-offer work screen;
- Possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.
Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Two years of experience in nursery/grounds maintenance and one-year supervisory experience. Education in nursery management, landscape, horticulture, agronomy, forestry, or plant pathology may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Arborist Certification and possession of an insecticide and herbicide applicators license.
To be successful, the expectation is that a candidate will be able to competently perform the routine tasks of the position with limited supervision by the end of the probation period.
Salary: $36,171.20 DOQ
