Job Duty Description: This is skilled work in directing the operation and maintenance of physical plant and grounds. Work involves supervision of subordinate physical plant supervisor and numerous other maintenance staff in the activities necessary to operate and maintain a large physical plant comprising Norton Correctional Facility which includes forty-four buildings, multiple boilers; water wells, water distribution and water treatment plant; sewage distribution systems/treatment plus other miscellaneous areas. Ensures thorough supervision of all mechanical system functions and structural safety. Oversees electrical systems and problems as well as several emergency generators.
Minimum Qualifications: Five years of experience in building trades or mechanical building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Performance Standards: Oversees skilled or semi-skilled employees in the installation, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems, such as steam, heat, electrical power, refrigeration or water supply and sewage systems; explains procedures, demonstrates techniques and assists subordinates in the more difficult projects. Oversees the preparation of reports pertaining to the operation of utilities and equipment, including the ordering and use of supplies and equipment needed in the operation, repair and maintenance of facilities. Plans and assists with planning for capital improvement projects needed to maintain and repair existing facilities or to obtain new facilities needed to support the Institution’s programs. Reviews proposed plans and specifications of proposed or approved projects and assumes construction inspection responsibilities to ensure that contractors comply with plans and specifications. Develops new procedures or modifies existing procedures or programs. Prepares budget requests and orders to ensure adequate supplies, equipment and personnel needed for the present and future operations, maintenance and repair of facilities are available. Selection Process: Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior based interview questions, and possibly a performance or written test. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval. A second interview may be conducted. Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency.
