Traffic around Capitol Complex affected by construction on Kansas Avenue

Kansas Avenue in downtown Topeka is undergoing extensive construction, which will affect traffic around the Capitol Complex. Please see the following information, provided by the City of Topeka.

Traffic:
The east side of the avenue is closed for improvements in 2014.  Two-way traffic is still available from 6th to 10th Streets, but no left turns are allowed in that stretch.

 The east side is expected to be completed in November.  Crews will begin work on the west side of the avenue in April 2015.

On-street, metered parking is available on the west side of Kansas Avenue from 6th to 10th Street, and on the side streets.  Just ask your Downtown merchant for a parking voucher.

You can also get two hours of parking free in the following City Parking Garages when you shop Downtown.

Park free during Kansas Avenue construction in the following garages:

  • Townsite Plaza Garage 110 SE 6th Street:  6:00 a.m. Saturday – 1:00 a.m. Sunday
  • Park-N-Shop Garage 615 SE Quincy:  6:00 a.m. Saturday – 1:00 a.m. Sunday
  • Centre City Garage 825 SW Kansas Ave:  6:00 a.m. Saturday – 1:00 a.m. Sunday
  • Crosby Place Garage 108 SW 8th Street:  6:00 a.m. Saturday – 1:00 a.m. Sunday

Project Schedule:
Phase I – 2014 – East side of Kansas Avenue from 6th to 10th Streets

  • Demolition: May to June
  • Underground Utilities: May to August
  • Surface Pavement & Sidewalks: July to November
  • Street Lighting & Power: June to November

November 2014 – March 2015

  • Provide temporary pavement and traffic control as needed to winterize project

April 2015 – November 2015

  • Construct west half of Kansas Ave from 6th to 10th Ave
  • Provide two-way traffic in new northbound lanes (east half of Kansas Ave)
  • Provide two-way traffic in new northbound lanes (east half of Kansas Ave)
