TOPEKA _ A summer of music and fun winds down this week with the final South Steps Fridays of the season. This week’s theme will be “Back to School” with more than 30 organizations taking part to send students back to the classroom.

The event, hosted by the Kansas Department of Administration, takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the South Steps of the Kansas Statehouse. Music is provided by the KU Jazz Combo, sponsored by Reach Out Kansas Inc.

More than 30 organizations, including the six Regents universities, Washburn and Baker, are scheduled to participate in the event. There will be give-aways by the participants, including two backpacks loaded with school supplies provided by staff from the Department of Administration and Trampo Lazer Rockball Park in Topeka.

Several area museums will also be participating, including the Lecompton historic site and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.

Heartland Park Topeka will have two dirt track cars and drivers on hand, as well.

“This has been a tremendous summer and we are so pleased with the growth in this event,” said John Milburn, Director of Legislative and Public Affairs for the Department of Administration. “We hope this has been as much fun for our guests and partners as it has been for us. We want this to become a summer tradition in Topeka for state employees, downtown visitors and guests from all across Kansas.”

There is no charge to attend the event. Visitors are invited to bring their lunch and lawn chairs to listen to the music and enjoy the grounds of the Statehouse. Food truck vendors are also available along 10th Street in front of the Statehouse.
